Why you should apply for a job you’re not 100% qualified for

Against all odds there is always a possibility to land a job you never would have dared to apply for. A study showed that most women only apply for jobs they are 100% qualified for, while men on the other hand will apply for jobs where they only meet 60% of the criteria. I’m not saying you should apply for a job you’re not qualified for — but meeting 60% of the job criteria could be enough to get the job.

There are two main qualities that are more valuable than meeting 100% of the criteria: Resourcefulness and Adaptability

Let’s talk about resourcefulness first. A lot of jobs will ask for “advanced skills” in computer programs, like Excel or SAP. You will probably think that not having years of experience with these programs will make you a bad candidate for the job. However, being resourceful is way more important than being a master in the program.

First because being resourceful means you can do anything a master does — you just need to know which information you need and where to get it. For computer programs there’s usually a lot of information to be found online, such as User Guides, YouTube Tutorials or Forums. Most skills can be learned online.
