What to know when first moving out (Kitchen Edition)

I was the first of my siblings to move out from home, despite being the middle child. My older brother who is roughly 4 years my senior has just moved out and he had a lot of questions. In this article I want to focus on the kitchen, as it is the most vital room for me.

In the kitchen life happens. Food is being prepared, great conversations are held here and it’s also our go-to spot for when we’re bored. So having a well-equipped kitchen is important. Here is my advice:

  1. Invest in quality, not quantity

One mistake I made when first moving out was focusing more on quantity rather than quality. Eventually, I ended up paying more because I had to replace low-quality items.

The most important thing for me was having a good set of tools. There’s nothing more annoying and dangerous than bad tools.

I always recommend a good set of knives. Dull knives lead to more accidents than sharp ones, because we need to use more force and might slip. It also makes sense to buy knives in a set. Must-have knives include a bread knife, a utility knife, a paring knife and a chef’s knife. It is reasonable to buy a knife block to keep them stored away safely.
